What to buy in Korea: a practical shopping checklist

A small shortlist, a store comparison and a plan for your first shopping trip.

What should you buy on your first Korea trip?

Start with something you will use, a gift with a known recipient, and enough room to bring both home. For a manageable first list, compare one beauty item at Olive Young, one stationery or organiser category at Daiso, and one clothing item at MUSINSA STANDARD. You do not need to buy from all three. These are editorial shopping ideas, chosen to help you make decisions rather than follow a sales ranking.

The useful question is not which store is cheapest overall. It is which stop answers your shopping need, and what you need to check there. A pack of masks, a notebook and a T-shirt have different purchase units, gift considerations and luggage demands. Use the comparison below to choose your priority before you enter a store.

Olive Young, Daiso or MUSINSA?

Olive YoungSkincare, lip colour and sheet-mask referencesA beauty gift can be personal; an attractive set is only useful if its formula and options suit the recipient.Exact product line, shade, volume, ingredients and pieces in the pack
Daiso KoreaStationery and travel-organiser categoriesA category leaves room to choose a design, but gives you less certainty about the exact item before arrival.Dimensions, material, quantity, label price and bag space
MUSINSA STANDARDEveryday clothing, starting with a basic tee referenceFit matters more than a familiar size letter; buying clothing for someone else needs their measurements.Store type, garment measurements, colour, fabric and care label

Daiso's official category directory includes stationery and household categories. Our suggestions narrow that broad range to a small gift or useful organiser. They do not identify a verified Daiso SKU. MUSINSA STANDARD is the own-brand clothing option in this comparison; check the store label rather than treating every MUSINSA location as the same shop.

Five product references to make the shortlist concrete

These product-card references were checked on 4 October 2026. They identify online versions, not current branch stock, shelf prices or items we have personally tested. Choose one that fits an existing need; the full list is not a recommended shopping basket.

A first-trip workflow you can follow

  1. Write the purpose beside each item. For example: one tint for yourself, two stationery gifts, or a tee replacing one you wear often. A clear recipient or use makes alternatives easier to judge.
  2. Set your own spending limit in won. Reserve separate money for transport and meals. Leave space under your limit for a second option instead of assuming an online promotion applies in store.
  3. Save identification details. Keep the Korean name, product photo, option and quantity together. Add the shopping phrases for asking about stock or another size.
  4. Choose the branch before the route. Use official store tools and map the exact addresses. The Myeongdong planning guide gives a starting framework if that neighbourhood fits your day.
  5. Compare the full purchase unit. If one shelf price covers two bottles, compare it with two equivalent bottles, not one. For different volumes, calculate price per equal volume only after matching the formula.
  6. Review at checkout. Confirm the option and quantity, request a receipt, and ask the shop about any purchase conditions you need before paying.

Keep one fallback, then stop

If your exact shade or size is unavailable, use the original purpose to choose a fallback. Another notebook design might still work as a gift; a different skincare formula requires a new ingredient check. Keep the replacement within your budget and bag space. Leaving without an unsuitable item is a useful shopping outcome too.
